At Walker Assist, our story originates from a profoundly personal experience that deeply affected our founder. When his aunt's rehabilitation insurance coverage expired, the facility was unable to continue funding her therapy sessions. Similar to numerous residents in nursing homes, she and many others spent most of their days seated in wheelchairs, with restricted opportunities to practice walking and restore mobility. Our founder observed directly how reliant patients were on therapists for even fundamental practice, prompting a thoughtful question: How could his aunt safely use her walker on her own, enabling her to practice at her preferred pace and rest in her wheelchair as required?

Resolute in seeking a resolution, he searched online, anticipating a simple device that would securely connect a wheelchair to a walker. Surprisingly, no such product existed, with nothing available to fulfill this essential need. This discovery sparked his inventive mindset. He resolved to develop a solution himself.

Beginning with common household items, he prototyped in his garage using a telescoping car snow brush purchased from Walmart, adapted with Velcro straps to join the devices. Although innovative initially, testing with his aunt highlighted significant safety concerns, as the connection proved unstable and posed risks of collapse and harm. Persistent in his efforts, he refined the design further. During a nursing home visit, he noticed the robust mounting of wheelchair footrests, which offered valuable inspiration. He acquired a pair, modified them for firm attachment, and identified strong truss clamps from the theater lighting sector to establish a dependable connection.

By engaging in discussions with therapists, patients, and caregivers, he integrated insightful suggestions, improving safety, usability, and overall effectiveness. Following months of committed development, Walker Assist emerged as a straightforward, dependable tool crafted to enable individuals to practice mobility safely and autonomously.
